Update: 25th June 2004

Well Hello My Dear Soft-Bombers!

It has been a while since I have made contact with y'all because I've been awaiting good news - and it's here, in truckloads!

Firstly - many of you are aware that The Chills have been recording new material (for nearly the first time in ten years sadly) and I am going up to Auckland early July to mix these ten tracks. Probably six or seven will end up on the new CDEP called, at this point "Stand By! (Something's Brewing)".

For owners of Secret box, an exclusive DIY sleeve template. (please read the instructions below!)

click the pic to download the pdf

The Secret Box sleeve is a self assembly box sleeve, housing three standard CD jewel cases. It features a full Secret box track listing and comes as a downloadable PDF file.

You should download the PDf (9.7mb) and take it to a print shop and get it printed at A3 on 250gsm card. Then follow the instructions on the template and cut out and glue the tabs where shown.

It takes a bit of effort, but it's well worth it and makes a loveley new home for your Secret Box CD's.

Back with a vengeance
2002 looks set to be a productive year for the Chills.

Big picture and bonus for the curious

The current line-up consists of (left to right) Rodney Haworth: bass, Todd Knudson: drums, James Dickson: keyboards, Martin Phillipps: vocals/guitars, and Martin swears it's one of the best bands he's ever played with.

They have been an active unit for nearly three years although they have only played around a dozen shows in this time. The delay caused by Martin having to take time out to battle Hepatitus C and other health issues.

The new set consists of a few old faves and some new material as the band starts to finalise some of the thousand-plus "song-seeds" Martin has accumulated on tapes over the years (prior to recently getting the computer gear needed to move forward and find The Chills' style within the new technology.)

If you're familiar with The Chills and think it's all just history, then think again! This ain't no retro/nostalgia package - The Chills are very much a serious ongoing concern.

Stay tuned - it's going to be an exciting and extraordinarily productive year.

To the very cool Softies
I hope to work on my all-round fitness (to give me the necessary energy to do things properly) over the next few months whilst the Chills begin more serious work on new material - although I first need to digitise, organise and select from the hundreds of riffs I've accumulated and then choose the best path to take with the material. I'll then present the band with audio blueprints (demo's!) of structures, atmospheres and intentions which will be then worked on as a group. Perhaps fifty new songs might be whittled down to still more than enough for the next album [working title remains 'Silver Bullets' which represents tangible, effective energy against dark forces!], extra tracks/B-sides and other new material for the gigs. We then hope to work hard developing the new material (and bringing a new selection of some old songs up to scatch) before going into the studio proper with our demo's in the middle of 2002.

Thanks again everyone. Stay cool and strong, love from the "Big Chill", Martin Phillipps
